Tasting the unexpectedly delicious: Zagreb

While Croatia’s capital had originally just been a pit stop on my way to the coast, I found myself really enjoying the outdoor cafes, museums and nightlife of Zagreb.

Like Bratislava, a lesser known city with an odd name, I found myself enjoying exploring a place I wasn’t that familiar with, complete with unexpected discoveries. For example, some of the more innovative vegetarian food that I’ve had in Europe.

Vegehop is pretty near main center; the cafe does raw and vegan food, and it’s a bit pricer, but worth it. Like the extra savory zucchini and mushroom rolls, all raw, and a refreshing break from vegetarian menu standards. They do good basic veggie faire as well, as their rice, tofu and salad was expertly cooked and seasoned.

Nishta is also close to main center area, and has a lovely light and airy atmosphere.Their menu is fairly extensive, with an eclectic and tasty food selection. (This is also where I got the idea for vegan fish cakes, BTW.)

Hooray beer!

My favorite veggie and gluten friendly eatery, by far, was Zrno Bio Bistro. It’s closest to the main center, they have gluten free beer, and have a lovely shaded patio if you need a place to hang out and collect your thoughts. (Brunehaut Beer, one of the best!) Also, a friendly staff, delicious desserts, and tasty veggie dishes.

Life is short. Eat dessert first. (Vegan layered pudding, Zrno Bistro.)
