Cadbury Creme eggs versus Milka eggs: a reflection

The best way to do taxes: with a Cadbury creme egg.

My last Easter was sadly without any Cadbury eggs. While they’re sold in the U.S., they aren’t for sale in Czech or Poland. Even though England is much closer to central Europe than it is to the United States (Hershey has license to make them in the States.) Cadbury’s other products are for sale, but not the creme eggs.

My childhood Easters always had hollow chocolate bunnies, chocolate eggs wrapped in pastel foil. But the main treat was those scrumptious eggs. My other friends from Ireland the U.K. all have the same collective memory of Cadbury’s.

Milka's vanilla egg.

But this year, I discovered Milka’s Easter eggs. While they don’t have the same melty gooey sweetness that Cadbury does, they’ll do in a pinch. The outer shell is pretty much the same, a sweet milk chocolate. However, the filling is more like a vanilla nougat. Cadbury’s filling is creamy, while Milka is fluffy.

However, one advantage to Milka: they are better designed. They come with a small purple spoon, to tap off the top and scoop out the filling inside. While Cadbury’s eggs are delicious, the design is a bit flawed. Bite into them, as any child knows, and the lovely filling goes everywhere. You either have to stuff the whole delicious thing into your mouth (oh darn!) or eat overly carefully. (I was one of the overly careful eaters.)

This year, I found a comprise. As I had friends from the various British Isles (Ireland and Wales) I asked them to bring back some Cadbury Eggs. They understood completely, and I wound up with enough eggs to share with an English coworker.

So I got to eat Cadbury’s eggs with a Milka spoon: truly the best of both worlds.Milka

  1. I would happily trade Cadbury eggs for Milka eggs! The last place I found here in the US that sold Milka eggs no longer has them so I will have a sad no Milka eggs Easter :(((
